EkÄdaÅÄ« is one of the most important observances in Vaiį¹£į¹ava tradition and is especially emphasized in ISKCON and all sampradÄyas devoted to Lord Vishnu / Krishna. Hereās the significance:
Ā
š What is EkÄdaÅÄ«?
EkÄdaÅÄ« literally means the 11th day of the waxing (Åukla pakį¹£a) and waning (kį¹į¹£į¹a pakį¹£a) phases of the moon.
This means there are two EkÄdaÅÄ«s every month (about 24 in a year, sometimes 26 with extra lunar months).
Ā
š¼ Spiritual Importance
Day of Devotion to Lord Vishnu ā EkÄdaÅÄ« is considered most auspicious for remembering and serving Krishna.
Fasting & Sense Control ā By observing EkÄdaÅÄ« vrata (fast), devotees minimize bodily demands and increase focus on spiritual practices like japa, kÄ«rtana, and ÅÄstra reading.
Pleasing the Lord ā Scriptures like Padma PurÄį¹a, Bhaviį¹£ya PurÄį¹a, and Hari-bhakti-vilÄsa glorify EkÄdaÅÄ« as a day that pleases the Lord immensely.
Destroyer of Sins ā It is said that the merits of fasting on EkÄdaÅÄ« surpass even performing great sacrifices or pilgrimages.
Bhakti Enhancement ā EkÄdaÅÄ« weakens material desires and strengthens oneās attraction to the Holy Name and service.
Ā
š„ How It Is Observed
Fasting ā Many devotees completely abstain from grains and beans. Some follow nirjala (no food or water), while others take fruits, milk, nuts, and non-grain items.
Charity & Seva ā Serving Vaishnavas, distributing prasÄda, books, or engaging in any Krishna-centered service.
Ā
š Scriptural Glorification
Lord Krishna says in Padma PurÄį¹a: āOf all plants, the sacred Tulasi is most dear to Me, of all months KÄrtika is most dear, of all places My beloved DvÄrakÄ is most dear, and of all days EkÄdaÅÄ« is most dear.ā
Ā
š ISKCONās Practice
Devotees strictly avoid grains, beans, and items prepared from them on EkÄdaÅÄ«.
Instead, they honor EkÄdaÅÄ«-prasÄdam (potatoes, milk, fruits, sabjis, nuts, etc.).
Special kīrtans, readings, and extra japa are encouraged.
š In essence, EkÄdaÅÄ« is the āMother of Devotionā, helping us to cut down material attachments and increase our remembrance of Krishna.
