Ekadasi

Hare Krishna šŸ™

Ekādaśī is one of the most important observances in Vaiṣṇava tradition and is especially emphasized in ISKCON and all sampradāyas devoted to Lord Vishnu / Krishna. Here’s the significance:

Ā

šŸŒ™ What is Ekādaśī?

  • Ekādaśī literally means the 11th day of the waxing (śukla pakį¹£a) and waning (kṛṣṇa pakį¹£a) phases of the moon.
  • This means there are two Ekādaśīs every month (about 24 in a year, sometimes 26 with extra lunar months).

Ā

🌼 Spiritual Importance

  1. Day of Devotion to Lord Vishnu – Ekādaśī is considered most auspicious for remembering and serving Krishna.
  2. Fasting & Sense Control – By observing Ekādaśī vrata (fast), devotees minimize bodily demands and increase focus on spiritual practices like japa, kÄ«rtana, and śāstra reading.
  3. Pleasing the Lord – Scriptures like Padma Purāṇa, Bhaviį¹£ya Purāṇa, and Hari-bhakti-vilāsa glorify Ekādaśī as a day that pleases the Lord immensely.
  4. Destroyer of Sins – It is said that the merits of fasting on Ekādaśī surpass even performing great sacrifices or pilgrimages.
  5. Bhakti Enhancement – Ekādaśī weakens material desires and strengthens one’s attraction to the Holy Name and service.

Ā

šŸ„— How It Is Observed

  • Fasting – Many devotees completely abstain from grains and beans. Some follow nirjala (no food or water), while others take fruits, milk, nuts, and non-grain items.
  • Increased sādhana – Chanting more rounds, attending temple programs, hearing Bhagavad-gÄ«tā / ŚrÄ«mad-Bhāgavatam.
  • Charity & Seva – Serving Vaishnavas, distributing prasāda, books, or engaging in any Krishna-centered service.

Ā

šŸ“– Scriptural Glorification

  • Lord Krishna says in Padma Purāṇa:
ā€œOf all plants, the sacred Tulasi is most dear to Me, of all months Kārtika is most dear, of all places My beloved Dvārakā is most dear, and of all days Ekādaśī is most dear.ā€

Ā

🌟 ISKCON’s Practice

  • Devotees strictly avoid grains, beans, and items prepared from them on Ekādaśī.
  • Instead, they honor Ekādaśī-prasādam (potatoes, milk, fruits, sabjis, nuts, etc.).
  • Special kÄ«rtans, readings, and extra japa are encouraged.

šŸ‘‰ In essence, Ekādaśī is the ā€œMother of Devotionā€, helping us to cut down material attachments and increase our remembrance of Krishna.
